It's definitely an idea.
No one person can actually encompass all the major faces of their society, so it makes sense that someone would've thought of something like this at some point.
It's also very American, or at least Anglo. The kind of headcanon that comes naturally when your country's got
(1) a large and diverse democratic political culture and
(2) high level political polarization.
