To samefag Caucasian Muslims (Turks, Azerbaijanis, Dagestanis and Chechens) who were part of Russia joined the Islamic army of the Caucasus and rebelled against the Russian empire. This comprised around 20,000 soldiers. Fomenting rebellion within the Russian empire was a big part of the Ottoman Empire's strategy in WW1.

Any ethnic group that wasn't going to play ball with their plan, (Armenians/Assyrians/Pontic Greeks) were considered a liability.
