There's an episode where Columbo where he investigates a murder done by an intelligent, I think murder mystery author. Anyway, there's a scene in which Columbo says that "we do investigations all day everyday and the murderer only has one chance not to mess up and we'll find out eventually when he does." Basically no matter how smart you are even the smartest people are going to get caught.
