The 8 Dominants themselves should have been the party, and they shouldn't have all gotten along immediately either. Imagine how great this party would be in an actual Final Fantasy JRPG.

The game does feel like an extremely phony charade of a Final Fantasy title, produced by someone who's never made Final Fantasy before. So they just shove a ton of references in everywhere but completely gut the gameplay-thematic core of the franchise.

It has the very nice allure of the pseudo intellectual "sophisticated" political storyline about different fantasy kingdoms, lines of succession, war, murder and betrayal. But most of the detail is completely immaterial to the gameplay experience and "the themes" it tries to deliver, and almost none of it links back to the greater struggle meaningfully. Ultima sucks all the oxygen out of the games lungs, there was no more "breathing room" by the end. When you finally see Clive's star burn out you say "thank God it's over" instead of crying.
