Nonbinaries are usually nothing-characters or aren't thought-out because the brain comes to a halt when processing them. Being male and female does have an effect on a person's character, but when it's neither, the mind is dealing with a situation not encountered before. So usually people try to make them not too stereotypically feminine and not too stereotypically masculine, resulting in a mid character that doesn't have any strong personality traits or stand-out behaviors. Some people are also afraid of making these characters offensive, again ridding them of any strong features. It's rare for a nonbinary to escape the brain-confusion-induced characterization.
