But it also innovated with anatomy-specific shooting, intelligent for its era AI, stealth elements, a sniper rifle with a zooming scope, allied NPC companions and neutral NPCs, objectives that weren't just murder everything and push switches/find keys, elaborate setpieces, and much like Duke Nukem 3D,, its environments actually felt like real places rather than abstractions a la Doom or Quake. Perfect Dark elaborated on these innovations even further with stuff like all its famous alt-fire modes on its weaponry.

It feels like it would've been a natural progression from the manic freewheeling that first person shooters played like in the 90s; a kind of parallel FPS evolution that included Half-Life 1/2 and RTCW, with an emphasis on classic mechanics but contemporary settings and hitscan weaponry. This basically sat stagnant as a shooter design philosophy until Wolfenstein The New Order helped kickstart the FPS renaissance in 2014 and later FEAR-inspired shooters like Selaco or Trepang came from smaller developers.
