The main appeal of the November revolution was a speedy end to the war, but the Bolsheviks instead delayed it anticipating some kind of global revolution, prompting the Germans to begin an offensive into the Ukraine and take the breadbasket for themselves. Barely a year after the excitement of the revolution and the red army began looting village granaries.
Very quickly the red army ceased to be "revolutionary" in any meaningful sense of the world. Lenin was effectively a warlord in command of an army of mutineers in a state of desperation, fear and paranoia. If you served them your family would have bread, but if you deserted you would face the Cheka who killed something in the order of several 100k over the course of the war. The needs of the peasants were not a consideration beyond pressing their sons into service. They promised utopia, or at least an end to the war, and instead reduced Russia to the most base and brutal hierarchy and prolonged the mayhem for years.
