A man gets up in the morning and he goes to bed at night and he has to use everything in between to occupy himself until he dies. There’s nothing futile in any human ambition. I don’t see how my search for the numinous in this life is futile. When I watch a film that strives for “pure filmmaking”, I catch whispers of the divine, like wind blowing through trees.
Personally, I believe that people should follow their natural compulsions in this world (though perhaps Gadonsneed should not. But who knows? Maybe he will achieve spiritual deliverance before us all).

Nopers. Actually, I have never read any Russian literature — well, only Nabokov, and his English works at that. I was planning to take the Dostoevsky pill after I finish the book I’m currently reading, which is a book on (Bau)haus history. But perhaps I will read Tolstoy first then, since you have so kindly brought him to my attention. Sigh! So many books and joints and so little time. I’ve read 30 books this year so far and I still have a giant pile next to my bed to get through.
