Bilbao (1978), done in too many close-ups, not good spatial awareness, the environment is never well estabilished. Yes, it does create the intended claustrophobic effect but in my opinion it's all just bad aesthetic choices. I liked the narration, and it reminded me somewhat of Maniac (1980) and Nanami (1968) too, both of which are better films. Also, truly amazing beautiful pale tits, and in motion.

I just started reading Bobby’s Notes on the Cinematograph. I was initially planning to read it after I had finished all his joints, but then I decided that, after watching Au hasard Balthazar, he was artistically evolving too quickly for me to keep up with just by watching his joints alone. So I decided to read his notes. I laughed because my translation (from a New York Review Books edition) calls it “photographed theatre” and not filmed theatre like /film/bros say. I’m switching to photographed theatre from here on out!

I wonder about how to reconcile my evolving philosophy on film with my historical interests. Should I leave them behind? Of late I have become to consider non-diegetic music in film manipulative and hollow. And many other thoughts that seemingly disqualify me from enjoying photographed theatre films. However, as a comic book reader, and reader of Superman comics, I want to enjoy the new Superman movie. I wonder what I will think when I watch it. I wonder if I retain the tendency to enjoy photographed theatre when my own artistic interests diverge from it. (Recently I realised that I have no future in the film industry because all my student films so far have been made in the spirit of trying to make something novel and outside the proscenium arch, rather than in an attempt to reproduce what I have seen on a theatre screen and therefore assimilate into this tradition. Essentially, I have become a pretentious experimentalfag.)

I’m in an interstitial period in my life, it’s true. I hope Bobby can help illuminate the way to artistic liberation for me.

If you like the offbeat irony of The Third Man you may like the black comedy of The Big Combo. But you're right, most noirs are genre films, crime melodramas made with the slumbering inertia of studio system, there are very few that are awake. Personally because I love location shooting in classic cinema I prefer the subgenre of more socially conscious, neorealism influenced noirs that are called film gris, but there aren't many of them because social realism in America was destroyed by the blacklist. You can find the list of film gris on wikipedia if you're interested.

The only film noir I’m truly crazy about is Murder by Contract. I’m sure it’s only sparse because of the low budget, but this inadvertently saves the film… Instead of obnoxiously transmitting thematic ideas like a blazing fire, they, in the Bressonian sense, spark in your imagination like the flick of a matchbook, while you watch all these mundane images in this economic film. And it always feels all the more magical to me when that happens! I still remember how I gasped when that wind blew threw the grass in Tarkovsky’s Mirror.

When I read a novel, a comic book, watch actual theatre, or listen to music, I don’t think, “This is fake and hollow.” Perhaps it’s because film is such a young art form and it still hasn’t distanced itself fully from the others. I watched Ikiru a while back and it was my least-liked of all Kurosawa films I have seen because I thought, “This could have been a stage play or a novel and the effect would have been the same, this film didn’t make a case for itself as a film.”
Aren’t there intrinsic qualities that film has that don’t belong to other arts? I’m sure there are but most filmmakers don’t seek to weed them out from the art form’s antecedents. I’d like to go forward in time to 100 years from now to see if we’ve gotten any closer to “Pure Filmmaking”, and what that looks like.
Unfortunately, I’m not able to distil the vortex of my thoughts into an axiom just yet.

Fun fact: this number originally took place in their kitchen; this was tweaked when the film went from filming in real-life Denton, Texas to a soundstage in London due to Hollywood strikes at the time. Personally, I think shooting it this way would've been more effective but I'm not complaining.
