they were zoroastrian during Pahlavi era (1920 - 1979) and during Qajar era they were illiterate peasants, so probably a mix of everything. this Ayatollah stuff is straight from Iraq or India/Pakistan like Khomeini was, paid for by oil exports. they all come to Qom to study and then don't leave.
