Toriyama always was onto something. He put naked crystal character models for the girls in XIII. Some people just have a lot (a lot) of preconceived notions about what is and isn't Final Fantasy and so establishing the new identity was almost entirely uphill and he was pigeonholed whenever the game development/technology wasn't perfect.

See above. In reality, X-2, XIII trilogy and the VIIR series are all shitposted to death as being antithetical to the identity of Final Fantasy just as much as any other. They are all sequels and exist in hallway overworlds that don't have airships (yet) and they each push the series action combat integration with ATB elements further and further with every new game.
It has taken them this long to get this far, figuring out what real time action ATB should look like, figuring out what sexy new FF costumes can look like, figuring out how the airship works, figuring out the new modern identity. Now it's time to put it all on the line and make every new game going forward follow this new action ATB template with Jobs and fan service that has taken us so long to establish.
