The best way to not get mauled by a bear is to be trail aware and simply avoid any contact.
Bring bear spray. It won't be 100% but it should be your first option if you have time. Keep it drawable with your non dominant hand and know how to use it, like the extended spray range and don't spray upwind like a dumbass.
Your chances are not 100% with 9mm. If you must bring 9mm, bring hard cast bullets. Preferably bring 10mm for a decent sized semiauto cartridge with similar muzzle energy to .45. You can also bring a revolver, hut remember when selecting a cartridge you need to be able to aim several shots accurately and quickly, and in the worst case with only one hand. An enraged bear or a mama with cubs will fight to the death and they have decently thick hides.
Ideally a shotgun with Brenneke slugs would be your preferred option, but it is not very carryable while walking.
