Rainbow Dashing through the origins of the Superstorm, in
/FSBC/

This is a very intense story. After it properly starts, that is—the opening is pretty long, with the "true" plot only beginning after a third of the fic is done, and the epilogue chapter is substantial as well. They are much-needed parts of the story, to be sure, and without them, Dash's personal struggles would both feel empty and pointless. Luckily, the density of the middle 50% is high enough to justify this structure.

Like, damn, those middle 15k start with a life-or-death scenario and continue in a constant escalation of stakes, both objective and personal, until the climax. The author managed to avoid making it feel exaggerated (for me, at least), which is crucial for a fic like this. Rainbow Dash is challenged by both nature and her own limits, over and over again, just barely managing to do what she can. I liked this fic, and I think it's better than how much I liked it; it realized its idea in a convincing, very capable manner, and I can't find much to criticize here. Maybe some could try to say that the tension was too high and reaching into the absurd? I'd disagree pretty firmly—this is what the fic is about—but I can see how it could not be to SoL-only enjoyers tastes. Then again, no fic can appeal to everyone, and it'd be silly to criticize them for it.
Despite the dangerous situation and some very close calls, it didn't feel like the fic lost any of its "ponyness". Between the antagonist being an uncontrolled, wild superstorm, the strong focus on Loyalty that Dash exhibits, and the general focus on Dash's inward analysis of her character, nothing breaks the setting here. The interactions with all the other ponies feel appropriate, and I liked the Wonderbolt dynamic she's had with Soarin and Spitfire. Slight tangent that I shouldn't be delaying the posting for: do people even remember that RD used to be shipped with Soaring simply everywhere? It feels like one of the ships that went almost completely extinct compared to its glory days.

Anyway: Good, well-written fic. Can recommend.
