The lore is simple. The mario verse is a multiverse. Each game is set in their own universe. Each verse has their own set of characters that looks identical but has different personalities and backstories. In some verses they are friendly with each other, in some verses they are shapred like papers, in some verses they are sworn enemies, in some verses they are really into golfing. Rosalina is the one that is able to observe all these different iterations of universes.
