The Viola Caipira is the traditional instrument of the caipira culture.
It is a 10 or 12 strings guitar based on the Portuguese Viola that were introduced by the Jesuits in the early days of colonization in São Paulo as a tool to convert the natives, in this process some of their dances and rhythms were combined to the sound of violas, originating the rhythms of cateretê, cururu and Santa Cruz.
Over the time, the Bandeirantes explorers who lived in this environment began to build their own violas, making it a popular instrument.
These Bandeirantes were the first disseminators of Viola Caipira outside of São Paulo, they used to explore the continent in search of gold and precious stones, founding villages, farms and settlements in the interior of the continent, despite being dismembered from São Paulo by the Portuguese Crown, the Bandeirante settlements and their traditions remained in these regions, and it is still a tradition to this day.
