If a nuclear power can tie down another nuclear power by creating a third then it's at the least an option. Russia worring about Iran when it's juxtaposition to the west is the only meaningful global threat is hard to justify. A nuclear armed middle east already exists via Pakistan, India and Israel. Iran going ahead with a small program is only really a concern to Israel. With that said, Israel is a far more geopolitically destabilizing force than Iran or its weapons programs in the middle east. I believe that any rational leader in Iran cannot come away from this without believing nuclear proliferation is a necessity for survival. Elements of the world may disagree but also lack the means to effectively prevent it. If anything I think Russia is more concerned about ethnic Russians in Israel and around the world seeing Israel glassed then any other facet of a nuclear Iran. But I believe they are desperate and giving the west endless proxy wars to drown on and waste materials on may superceded the needs of Russian diaspora in Israel, particularly when the alternative is dealing with an unburdened United States in kinetic conflict. All of this is besides the point I am trying to make; that countries cannot stop conflicts just as this one but will use them to further their own means. Russia may not want a nuclear armed Iran or conflict in the middle east, but if it is beyond their control to stop it then they can atleast leverage it to destroy their opponents as America did I Ukraine. And they may be able to cripple both parties such that Iran is no longer a threat either just as America did with Ukraine. States will given desperate times be so opportunistic that they pursue conflicting interests.
