I think stalker soc and cop were the only games where I didn't feel totally gimped going in with a subgun in my loadout. The lightweightness of the ammo and gun meant I had more room to carry loot back and the specialty pistol ammo made fights more reasonable, plus bandits carried loads of pistol ammo to loot in the early game anyway.
