Tax revenue from alcohol only raises around 12.5 billion each year. NHS costs are around half that but you've also got to think of the other costs to society. Police costs for alcohol related crimes would probably be in the billions too, criminal damage, domestic violence, car insurance premiums going up, infrastructure damage from alcoholic drivers etc. Half of drinkers cannot control themselves.
If alcohol were introduced today, it would be a class a drug. It has worse health effects than weed, a natural plant. The government could easily get good income from weed. But no, they take you to court for having a bit of weed the second time, give you a DBS mark and then make you unemployable. Great logic. Meanwhile alcoholics can freely poison themselves and turn up to work the next day. Alcohol is far worse for society.
