I love old cars and have a Plymouth of the 60's but there are advantages to crumple zones. Look up vintage car wrecks. People used to get gruesome injuries from low speed collisions. With nothing to absorb the energy, your face would go into the windshield (which was really close), your ribs would crack on steering wheel (or you'd be harpooned of the center of the wheel protuded) and your knees would get penetrated by knobs and the ignition key.
Of course the have little damage and van be fixed cheaply but what's the point when you're crippled.
