It's been awhile since i've played but i'd definitely try and learn combos when enemies get panicked, at least for bosses. If it wasn't obvious to you already, you can cancel any of your light attacks into countersparks so there is some safety when using them to be aggressive. Enemies are more defensive in this than you might expect and I think a big part of offense is setting up moves that can punish them for blocking or dodging. You can deal massive ki to the opponent or just get some extra hits in for this and be safe if they go for an attack instead, definitely experiment with the weapon skills more to figure out their purpose. Some are good for "option selecting" which can cover all options, some deal massive ki damage if the opponent blocks, some moves only exist to punish panicked enemies. Note that if a skill does a big grab on enemy, you can use it on them when they're out of ki and it will do more damage than the generic one.

Oh and yeah, use the dojo to practice a lot. It's fun.
