The death of the Alliance wasn't Arthas, but the hubris of its members. Silvermoon turned its back on its human allies sans a few good samaritan elves. Lordaeron only got support from Dalaran who could offer research assistance but not the armies needed to fight back the Scourge. They had to unify to stop the orcs; with their unity squandered, they all fell before the Legion's second attempt. Arthas would have been less desperate if the soldiers of Gilneas and Stromgarde showed up in force to assist, if Silvermoon unleashed its might, if the dwarves and gnomes provided further containment measures and wisdom.
That's the real tragedy. It isn't just the fall of Arthas, it's the whole of the Alliance succumbing to pride and choosing to be picked off one by one.
