The environment detail isn't super high, since it's a horror game they hide a lot of it in darkness and shadows. It's easier to tell during the parts of the game that are very well lit. Also, the face is higher quality than the rest of the body and clothes.
As for the PS2 specifically, I noticed that they compensated for performance in other ways like having lower quality fog effects (compared to the PC version). Also it was 30fps target on PS2 while 60fps on PC.
There's also strong depth of field during cutscenes to mask the environment. I will post another image for you to compare.
