I think their powers might be double edge swords that would destroy their body along with the enemy. The lost their limbs for apparent unavoidable reasons. When targeting the big jellyfish monster they complained about its body being too different. So they clearly can't just see something and blow it up. They always target the stuff that is already missing on them. Plus you'd think in a life or death situation they would go for something instantly fatal like the head.
