Superman is like, the 3rd most popular superhero, only really behind Batman and Spider-Man. What a dogshit excuse.

If Ironman bombed, the "this guy isn't that well known" excuse *might've* had some kind of weight to it, because the character legitimately owes most of his mainstream recognition to the movies, before them he was not a part of the mainstream, not like Superman, Batman or Spider-Man were.
