To me it seems that the timing of the rearward motion is independent of the timing of the forward motion. Once again, the timing of the forward motion is only set by the spring stiffness, and the reciprocating assembly mass.

Okay good video thank you. So the carrier cylinder bore being oversized means less gas than say a less oversized bore? Aren't the spring loaded gas rings supposed to accommodate this variation such that the gas seal is the same?
I really don't want to get caught up in the discussion about the bootleg carrier though. That truly is separate from what we're talking about with light primer strikes, hammer follow, lock time, and forward motion of the reciprocating assembly.
