Oh and one last thing. I'm not going to speak much about the NetBSD guys because I haven't interacted much with them beyond helping some friends in Japan port over some drivers. But between FreeBSD and OpenBSD this is what I've noticed:
>-OpenBSD
They're mostly concerned about doing their own thing and "code correctness" and the old UNIX way of "do one thing and do it well". The OpenBSD developers aren't afraid to go their own way. They develop a lot of original software like mg and got (https://gameoftrees.org/index.html) because they see real problems in existing projects (got is intended to be a better git for example). They're sometimes a bit opinionated but usually for good reasons ime. They're friendly as long as you don't act retarded and mean. They don't really care about what everyone else is doing. They just want to be left alone to make their comfy OS and software. They're always willing to help out though if you 1) show some effort yourself and 2) send hardware if you can't port stuff over yourself.
>-FreeBSD
This community is also generally nice. But the higher ups suffer from a lot of the same problems as modern Linux. It has a CoC for example and a guy was banned for giving someone a virtual hug on the IRC channel a few years ago. They like to use discord as a support channel. They prefer a xenforo forum to the mailing list. It has a "foundation" paying some lady that openly admits she's never used the OS thousands of dollars a year. They chase trends and most of the work revolves around porting over whatever is in fashion in Linux-land this year. They're more concerned about appealing to large corps. and the average user is usually not a programmer. But support seems decent when I've needed it and the users are generally nice. They also don't seem to ban people that rant about stuff like wayland/systemd/pottering cancer from their forums. At least not that often.
