I believe that Dess is being puppeted by Gaster and that the knight is her corpse being used as a vessel, but I also believe that we'll get Papyrus in chapter 5 and that he'll be working for the knight or confused as the Knight, I just don't see Paps not being important in someway to the plot, there's hints to him being important to the gaster list when you name the vessel, reverse undertale theory is still going strong and chapter 5 would be snowdin and if I remember correctly, Sans said he'll show up around the time the festival starts, he's going to show up and I believe it'll be a situation where the knight is manipulating him like flowey did in undertale

It could very easily be a narrative choice for deltarune too, someone who's forgettable ending up being important? it seems in line for something to be done with it here, we didn't even see his actual special attack either and Toby does seem to be bringing back ideas that wasn't in undertale into this game (like a mettaton neo fight being spamton neo and Gerson showing up), I'm just convinced that there's something more here to Papyrus than just a running gag of him not showing up
