It's not. I'm Irish and if there were 2 billion of us in the world I'd value the existence of tigers over my own. Life ends, it's sad when you know the person but that's just how things are. Only a crazy person cries over someone far away dying. Some things just have a higher value to us than abstract human lives. You could say that each of these lives matter to someone and that we just need more empathy, but if you had to choose between the Mona Lisa being destroyed and 100 random people around the world dying of cancer in the next year you'd probably save the Mona Lisa.
Imagine your grandkids see tigers in a textbook and ask you why they died out. Would you really be able to tell them that you did it to keep a few hundred thousand Indians out of the food chain? Would you appreciate that in their position? You made the world a less wondrous place for vanity.
