I've thought twice about looking at anything Dikotter's written after I read some of "The Age of Openness." He went to wild lengths to downplay the Warlord Era. Suggesting that the 1919 Arms Embargo precluded any possibility of serious warfare happening. Despite there being an entire book about how every country party to it circumvented it.
