As I recall, Riko's thing is the results-oriented environment she was raised in taught her that "love" is something that has to be earned rather than given, and that no one would care about her if she fell short of expectations. This makes her assume out of hand that anyone who approaches her wants something out of her - like good grades, getting in good with her dad's business (who's that old meme of "99%? SHAMUR DISPRAY, WHY NOT 100%"), or just to do work for them (which some teachers like the vice principal exploit to make her do their jobs for them).
Part of the reason she gets invested in helping with Palace 3 is that Katayama, before her life started falling apart, was one of the few who tried to look after her for the sake of it rather than to get something out of it - which the resentful Riko had rejected until it was too late.
