Sonic already loves Amy. That was never the issue. What you're actually supposed to wonder is whether or not Sonic and Amy could ever be "in a relationship" when Sonic refuses to commit to anything like that, due to his strong sense of personal freedom. In which case, the answer lies in how Amy responds to that, not so much Sonic himself.
