I still don't buy it. Really? Let's investigate. From what I've read of the war, Israel wanted to keep U.S. pressure off them because they were doing so well so they stalled for time. The attack on the Liberty happened on June 8 when Israel had effectively conquered the Sinai and the West Bank with the disintegrating Egyptian and Jordanian armies in full retreat. They achieved complete air superiority in the first few hours on June 5. Israel launched an offensive towards the Golan on June 9 (this front had been pretty quiet) and stalled for time with the U.S. to grabbed as much of it as they could.
