The default portraits are still great, though they have a bit of contrast since they're often by different artists.

The game itself is worth playing even if Disgaea portraits were a huge selling point, it is one of the very few drpgs that handles every single aspect well. Other games do individual aspects way better than Demon Gaze of course, but having all the interworking parts simultaneously well made is quite rare.
