Actually, wrong.
You can in fact made gradients in MS Paint, the old ass one.
It requires the use of the resize tool, you need to resize essentially to 1 pixel, then resize back out, using only the resize menu option, not the grabbers at the edges of the canvas.
Draw some colors diagonally and fill in similar to pic related for example.
Resize to 1 pixel, then back to your original resolution, congrats, you are a gradient lad now.
You can do way more funky ideas with it and the skew tool too.
