Victrix did a lot of that to avoid mail Burnie's having seams in it. If you look at the foot knights or the upcoming foot sergeants sprue, you can see that the hands are more freely poseable. I think the late Roman cataphracts also had pretty freely poseable hands, due to them having laminar armour.
