Germany was one of the pioneers of the industrial revolution, followed by Scandinavia. This isn't the real reason these countries are "the most successful" currently though. The EU just favors northern european preferences and institutions and the euro is built around the economic system of Germany. It plays aainst countries like Greece, Italy or Spain that have difference economic needs, more flexible monetary policy.
The crisis 15 years ago implemented austerity measures that were pushed disproportionately on southern and eastern EU countries. During that time Germany and the Netherlands ran surpluses and took advantage from the weakened euro, boosting their exports. There's always been cultural/institutional bias where germanic style governance is "the right way" and the EU in general just treats the south and east as the nigger periphery, often limiting us on purpose.
