It's honestly the opposite, because one of the core design philosophies of the game is accessibility. It's easy to pick up and play, the controls are responsive and offer the option for macros, it has an input buffer (which I believe is 6f) as opposed to Melee's lack of input buffering, frame data follows a consistent internal logic, and it's easier to perform advanced techniques like wavedashing, wavelanding, moonwalking, etc. I'm not claiming that this is entirely a good thing, by the way. I think that there are issues with making the game "too accessible".
On the other hand, the developers are retards and still haven't added tutorials for anything beyond basic offense or defense, so you have to either get your ass beat in matchmaking, refer to external resources (official and unofficial), or watch other players play to learn how to play. There is a semi-official video series that explains everything, but it's a pretty pitiful stopgap.

It has a respectable playerbase for a niche subgenre within a niche genre, where most games just McFucking die a month after release. I rarely have issues finding players at my skill level in both ranked and casual matchmaking, even in the dead of night.
The game is also very likely to be stable in the long-term because it's cheap ($30, $20 on sale), DLC characters are free, the developers directly support and promote the competitive scene, and it's still in active development so it's only going to get more features and polish over time. If it has cross-play, a console release will probably push it into truly relevant territory.
