It's obvious they were going for Kamen Rider and probably something like Guyver or the more organic looking tokusatsu like ZO and J and Shin. We had humanoid concept for the Greymon and Garurumon fusion that became Omegamon way back in the 90s so maybe they went back and saw that. Might be a coincidence but the shiny glowy lines and wheels on Gabumon remind me of Tron Legacy and the bit attack Gabumon has is inspired by bits from Gundam.
