In December 1945 the "Labor Union Law" was enacted in Japan that set up the first modern labor unions following World War II. By 1950 there was a split between more centrist and left-leaning labor groups which eventually lead to the creation of the General Council of Trade Unions (Sohyo/総評) which served as the umbrella organization for nearly half of all labor unions in Japan. Sohyo eventually merged with Rengo (連合) in 1987."
