>Above the Biljarda building and the monastery stood the never-finished tower called “Tablja,” conceived as a fortification to defend the monastery. Construction of the tower was initiated by Njegoš in 1833. With the building of Biljarda, the tower lost its intended function, and was instead used for ceremonial gun salutes and for displaying severed Turkish heads. This naturally shocked visitors to Cetinje, but the hanging of heads continued until 1850, and the beheading itself was only abolished by order of Prince Nikola in 1876. Later, the tower was converted into a bell tower that housed a large bell (1,631.5 kg – a gift from Laza Uroašević from Zemun). Tablja was demolished in 1938 during the preparation of the plateau for the construction of the Cathedral Church, and part of its stone was used to build a small, simple bell tower.
