The only reason the north thinks they're german is because it's not common knowledge that the actual settlers of the midwest and plains were southerners. It's more convenient for them to all think they're german despite being 10% german. Rather than them being used as cannon fodder to kill their relatives in the south and then getting raped by northern industrialists for 50 years after the civil war
