It's Cameron indulging his own tastes and politics and feelings about this and that.
And it's a perfect acceptable sci-fi adventure when they are honestly pretty hard to come by.
AND it was enormously successful, though that seemed secondary to Cameron, who was enthused about it on technical/creative levels.
Nor is it "overrated" by fans or critics.
