From authorial statements I've gathered that the arena Simon and AS fought eachother was supposed to be Bulk Space like in Xeelee Sequence, to do this you would actually have to (no seriously) be beyond dimensions. In bulk space it's a multi-dimensional structure where universes would actually be coherently spatially near eachother as hard as that is to imagine.
