Was I ever making a comparison, NIGGER? No. I want to FIX sonic and to do that you have to CHANGE it.
All you "Sonic scientists" here claim that Sonic gameplay has a certain style, but I don't think he ever HAD a style (talking strictly 3D here). Most of the time you just hold up or get forced on some rail or boost pad or home on enemies. And the few times they let you do anything, it's buggy as hell. They clearly suck at implementing real pinball wall running physics so they just railroad you.
They should give him an equivalent of a walljump (maybe like sideways ball bounce). Give him some kind of dive or air-kick to gain some height. Even in Adventure 2 he had a bounce bracelet that bounced higher consecutively. That's sorta like a triple jump, but levels are never designed for it. It's this kind of nuance that makes platforming fun. But all you Sonicfags think is best for Sonic is to just hold up on the joystick and put him on a rollercoaster. Cuz I guess that's "Sonic's identity. That's how it's always been!" FUCK YOU.
You know what game had some of this shit? Sonic ADVANCE. Yeah, they let you do tricks in the air to alter your momentum. Do the 3D games do this? NO, of course not.
I didn't mean that Sonic should be JUST Mario 64, but fundamentally he is what all 3D platformers should be built on. It's hard to explain in detail but there's a lot about SM64 that makes a good baseline. He has good turning, speed (sonic could be a bit faster), flips, wallkicks, air kicks, dives. You can't accelerate in mid-air and turn on a dime (which is why a lot of these Sonic games are broken because you can too easily jump over the whole level) It's all calibrated to near perfection. So the point is to just add to this with some unique Sonic moves like ball mode and air-tricks.
