Looking at the Artstation accounts of the former devs might shed some light

They were designing and modelling EVERY SINGLE FUCKING THING from scratch, right down to banal shit like spoons, oil canisters and alien Cup Noodle containers.
Now add the multiple potential artstyle changes, lore/environmental/world feature creep and whatnot and it easily adds up.
I really don't want to know just how much time they wasted on pre-production and how much they spent on the actual game.
