All he wants is a challenge, but nobody can give him one. He knows he could be so much better if there was somebody to push him, like Blue used to do, but he's long surpassed him, along with everybody else. The few challengers he gets anymore are so predictable and simple, they're barely worth the effort. Alone in Mt. Silver, his mind keeps circling back to Giovanni, to the war between the two of them. Why did he feel so alive when fighting the Rockets, in a way he hasn't felt since? He comes to an answer: because he was fighting with his life on the line.

Suddenly, things make sense. The way forward is clear. All beings evolve through conflict, pokemon or human. By killing indiscriminately, he will force someone to rise up and stop him, like he did Giovanni—they'll have to. And in the meantime, he'll amuse himself by dealing with everything they throw at him, every league hit squad, gym leader, Elite, Champion. He finds a hiker on his way out, kills her violently, and smears himself top to bottom in her blood, aided by the light of the moon. Now, he truly is Red—he ventures out into the night to begin his reign of terror.
