>I think it could be really interesting if it was more slow paced and kind of realistic
that's what I was thinking too. I really like No More Room In Hell (the original at least) for having that L4D style "go from A to B to win gameplay" but at a slower pace where the slow zombies area legitimate threat
>in that 1-3 shamblers really aren't that much of a threat to anyone that isn't a ham planet, but when your squad of 3 dudes is tasked with clearing a neighborhood quarantine zone you need to be a lot more careful and cooperative with your squad to not get surrounded.
yeah that was my exact idea, I think it would be cool to have two different gamemodes, one where you play as the prisoner guys and the other the military goons. Your prisoner character would start with nothing or very little like Dead Center from L4D2 (starting with melee weapons and maybe some shitty pistols).

The other gamemode with the HUNK military goons could have you start with a loadout and could have a significant difficulty increase or be similar to something like Killing Floor where you have to defend against waves and in separate lanes/areas.
The two modes/characters could have cross over where your prisoner character can accomplish a risky side task with the reward of being able to save items acquired throughout the level for usage by your Military Goon character. Sort of like scav runs in tarkov but without all of tarkovs other bs.

I think for world building (since this is some newly reestablished nation and a shitty prison system), player could have a titanfall like burn card system where they could start with a slight extra bonus items (maybe like an extra med pack or starting with a shitty pistol instead of only melee) at the cost of in game currency acquired throughout runs. This could help players/teams who aren't as good do better on higher difficulties
