I mean i dont really think theres any way of saying that killing civilians is wrong, but at the same time if the japanese didnt surrender far more suffering would have occurred. The imperial japanese were uniquely evil.

the second nuke was probably not necessary though

also dropping a nuke helped humanity in a perverse way. Thermonuclear bombs are sort inevitable scientific discoveries. Dropping them once has helped prove to the world why theyre so dangerous and why we should never use them again. If one country discovered them and then just hid them in silos for decades while the rest of the world was oblivious then they could literally kill millions of people instantly without fear of other nukes or similar weapons being sent back to them. If we have to have nuclear weapons then its best that we all have them and are all aware of how terrifying they are.

Compared to other tragedies of WWII the atomic bombs on hiroshima and nagasaki, while sad, were not the worst. Even the fire bombing of tokyo was deadlier and we hardly remember it. While the death toll is extreme by modern standards back then it was just business and honestly the majority of victims got a much more peaceful death than many causalities of the war. Most humans today i think have at least one direct ancestor that died a more painful and grueling death in WWII, i know i do.

I dont think humanity is going to see anything like this again for a long time. While i dont want humans to have nukes, the pressence of them does help prevent large wars like WWII.
