This culture in the coast of Santa Catarina was heavily influenced by Azorean immigrants. Santa Catarina was the largest Azorean settlement in Brazil. Previously, there were few inhabitants: Paulistas, Amerindians, some Spaniards, and a few Black slaves. Soon, the Azoreans surpassed this population (there were 6,071 Azoreans compared to 4,193 of other origins in the 18th century). Among the cultural traits left by the Azoreans in Santa Catarina there is the Boi-de-Mamão, the Terno de Reis and the Pau-de-Fita Dance. Their accent still retains many Azorean influences.
