The fans that had fed Star Wars since 1999 got the message and left, realizing there was no more future. Rian deliberately made TLJ to be hated, but Disney soon found that the hatred was replaced with apathy towards Star Wars that has yet to been cured. Worse yet, the hate towards TLJ was very different from the prequels in that if you hated it you were labeled a bad person and Trump supporter/nazi/racist. Star Wars became swept up in the greater culture war of Trump’s first term where all media had to be hyper-partisan to prevent his re-election, a strategy that cannibalized what remained of the Star Wars fandom.
This is ultimately the point Star Wars history ends, with the release of TLJ. The entire franchise died the night of its release and nothing else has mattered. Everything has come out after has become irrelevant and simply fighting against the tide. Nobody cares anymore. Star Wars went from the biggest IP in history to a second-rate streaming property that most people don’t care about. Beyond a few progressive internet activists still shilling the apparent genius of TLJ, there are no defenders of it left.
